It seems like cutting them into fewer pieces would actually be worse, because then they wouldn’t be as easily shovelable/sweepable. Generally, if something is in large chunks you need to move it bit by bit, instead of just sweeping it along. I’m probably incriminating myself right now, so I’ll stop.
